KUALA LUMPUR – The Customs Department will conduct an internal investigation following the discovery of a “cartel” smuggling frozen meat in Johor.

Director-general Datuk Abdul Latif Abdul Kadir told the New Straits Times that the probe will be conducted by the internal investigation and integrity unit.

It is meant to sniff out any customs official abetting the syndicate.

“No compromise. Our customs personnel are always reminded to stay away from corruption. Stern action will be taken against anyone involved,” he was quoted by the daily as saying in a text message today.

It was reported on December 2 that there is a syndicate smuggling in frozen meat from China, Ukraine, Brazil and Argentina, and repackaging the item with the halal logo at a warehouse in Senai, Johor Baru.

NST today reported that senior officers from four government agencies are working with the syndicate.

The officers reportedly received money, and sometimes women for sex, in exchange.

It is believed that the syndicate repackaged the frozen meat with fake halal labels. – The Vibes, December 21, 2020
